PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Chattanooga, TN garage /indie rock /jangle /power pop project of Matt Addison, aka Mythical Motors “To Waves Unknown” from the new album “Travelogues and Movie Stills” [Repeating Cloud]
Through I don’t know how many albums, honestly, I’ve lost count, the longtime prolific project by Matt Addisson delivers a Guitar pop/Rock sound that strikes a fine balance between unrefined lo-fi flair and infectious lilting harmonies, where a brilliant, never redundant concoction of bittersweet melodies, catchy riffs, compelling choruses along with moving and thoughtful vocals, seemingly both lightweight and dreamy, radiate deep emotional sincerity, to seamlessly hit the mark with nostalgia and spontaneity. Fifteen songs take us on a heady rollercoaster ride of warm, ecstatic jangle pop with 60s floral scents, intoxicating sunshiney power-pop and effervescent 90s indie-rock, to listen to effortlessly on repeat, from an artist that seems to possess the secret potion for an inexhaustible, captivating songwriting artistry.
- Düsseldorf-based Indian synth-pop /dream pop duo Us and I “Crushed” single
After almost 4 years of absence, the India-native Electronic Dream-Pop duo, now relocated to West Germany, resurfaces, surprisingly, with a nostalgic, bittersweet midtempo new song, draped in swirling arpeggiated atmospheric synths, alongside brassy wanderings and crisp guitar shimmers, to infuse a forlorn neon-lit ambience around wistful, dreamy vocals, longing, falling, then bursting into a vibrant emotional outpouring about escaping a dream before being crushed to death by it.
- South Frontenac, Ontario, lo-fi acoustic /shoegaze /indie folk singer-songwriter Benjamin Oakley, aka Sun Parker “Swan” single
The unfortunately not so prolific home recording shoegaze-y, atmospheric folk project from Ontario returns, after around a one and a half year hiatus, to immerse the listener in an entrancingly safe introspective aura, elicited by hypnotic folksy rhythms of strummed guitar, elastic lilting bass pulses, and emotional breaths of slightly tense reverbs, to echo and swirl around sad, fragile whispery yet vibrantly radiating vocals, taking time to adjust to a new mental state, before slowly drifting out of earshot whilst repeating “clean it up, minimize the things you find, the things you hide.”
