Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – APRIL #15-23
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Indonesian C-86 /jangle /indie pop band The Lousy Pop Group “Simple Pleasures” single on shiny happy records
Taking its name from 1991’s 7″ single by The Wake, the Indonesian combo crafts an endearing Indie-Pop of delicate, emotional and innocent melodic sensibilities, rife with refreshing Sarah Records scents, perfectly at ease in these first capricious days of spring. “Simple Pleasures” leads us through introspective, nostalgic longings for a bike ride on a sun-strewn cloudy day, scattered by sharp, wistful, obsessive jangly guitar melodies, racing gently, over a flowing trail of low humming bass lines and soft skipping drum patterns, along with dreamy sad vocals looking forward to shared good times with a loved one.
- Washington D.C. dream pop / indie rock / indie folk band Color Palette “Pacing Like a Lion” from “Pacing Like a Lion” EP on Enroute Records
D.C. band led by singer, musician & composer Jay Nemeyer moves on diverse hues of emotive and introspective Indie Rock sounds, rarely repeating themselves from one release to another, while maintaining a unique catchy, never predictable, melodic quality. After the successful dreamgaze jaunt of the previous single “Dreams”, the lead and title track explores still nostalgic, yet more euphoric and racing synth-colored soundscapes, that bounce on marching and bombastic drum beats, chugging bass lines, topped by warped zapping and whimsical synth strains, laced with frenetic fluttering melodies, cut through by sparse abrasive guitar riffs, around high angst vocal fear, “Pacing Like a Lion” before hitting the stage to rock and roll.
- Dublin, Ireland-based indie rock /dream pop /shoegaze 4-piece Blue Slate “Wipers” single
A miss from the last, perhaps, too invasive Bandcamp Friday, we recover the new single from the Irish quartet, who, seemingly departing from an originally grungey-infused sound of the first EP, to trigger MBV-tinged shoegaze leanings. Introduced and interspersed by reflective strumming atmospheric cinematic moments, “Wipers” is awash with a dense, turbulent and fuzzed-out wall of sound that undulates and swarms, with dreamy nostalgia, across distant and floating wispy vocal euphoria and despairingly beautiful melodies, falling in love amid sudden outbursts of angsty distortions.
