PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • California ethereal dream-pop solo project Crimson Whisper “Falling Through the Night” single from the upcoming album “Vast World”

Released last week, but definitely worth checking out the latest mesmerizing single from the Californian Ethereal Dreampop solo project, which sways on tambourine shakes and pulsing moody bass lines, wrapped in shimmering evocative spirals of effect-filled, sparkling guitar melodies, echoing with downhearted trembling intensity atop an agony and an ecstasy of caressing yet piercing female cries, helplessly falling through the droning vastness of the night.

  • Italian dream-pop /psychedelic /shoegaze band from Naples, Mary’s Restless Dream “Oshian” single

Naples-based shoegazers delivers a dark slow burning psychedelic long journey in search of light, through a lens of fear and doubt, submerges into an introspective simmering tension carved by a buzzy, pinpoint bass lines, crisp hypnotic percussions, and wailing and increasingly squalling sparkling guitar melodies layered with ghostly dramatic synths, to echo lost, unhurried, vocals, shedding drawn out spoken word shadows of angst and gloom, before being engulfed by a rising release of droning distortions.

  • Oakland, CA indie pop band fronted by Yea-Ming Chen, aka Yea-Ming and The Rumours “Pale Blue Eyes” (The Velvet Underground cover) originally recorded for The Oakland Weekender 2024 compilation tape

Back from one of the most captivating folk-pop albums of last year and in the middle of working on The Rumours‘ 4th album to be released in 2026 via fellow Dandy Boy Records, the Bay Area singer-songwriter once again unveils heartfelt immediacy and suave grace in dealing with the classic intimate and fragile lovelorn ballad, rich with sweet and delicate on-the-hush melancholy, written by Lou Reed in 1969. Performed, recorded and produced by Yea-Ming Chen with the help of Rob Good on lead guitar, the charming reimagining is built on a more urgent tight guitar strumming interspersed with hints of West Coast “acid” guitar tones a la Jorma Kaukonen with the wistful, dreamy crystal clear vocals longing for “Pale Blue Eyes”, seamlessly able to melt the coldest souls.
