Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – MARCH/APRIL #13-23
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Japanese experimental /dream pop /shoegaze unit Cosmicdust “Q” from the upcoming cassette E.P. “YAF”
The first teaser from the Japanese unit unfurls over an unsteady flow of shimmery harmony and searing dissonance, amidst sparkling winding guitar arpeggios with soft longing whispers and soft syncopated percussions, under a weighty warped abrasive dome of chaotic reverbs to channel faraway melancholic spirits cloaked in edgy disharmonious dread.
- Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania shoegaze /psych-pop /dream-pop 4-piece Kali Ma and the Garland of Arms “Amiss” single
Wilkes Barre group’s new single radiates spacey and expansive stirring introspection that shudders through winding sparkling guitar melodies echoing under a crystalline night sky ruffled by stumbling drum beats, and warm sinuous bass line pulse, awash by emotive keyboard orchestrations, into intoxicating flows around uplifting heartfelt vocals, rising and falling in emotional searing sways of wisdom and hope.
- UK indie-rock /noise pop project of former Horowitz member Matt Hicks, The Hermitts “The Moors” single
Old acquaintance of the most attentive and united ‘Popkids of the World’ as a member of the early ’00 Stoke-On-Trent‘s cult indie-pop trio Horowitz with their heavily guitar-laden fuzz pop channeling the spirit and the energy of C86 sound aesthetic from fellow citizens Rosehips and Bristol’s Flatmates mixed with the anodyne at times rickety lo-fi US indie rock a la Pavement or Guided By Voices, and sprinkled with hints to JAMC and Teenage Fanclub fuzz along Elephant 6-like power pop. The Hermitts is the solo project of Matt Hicks, always able, albeit no major surprises are to be expected, to compose compelling little noisy pop tunes played on essential but ceaselessly persuasive chords. After a 2022 4-track EP and a feature, with a cover of Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers classic, on the recent Zine/compilation “Lower Than Underground vol. 1”, both via the esteemed Greek DIY imprint Old Bad Habits Label, the new single is no exception driving nostalgic hazy moods through steady punchy rhythms, buzzing and ringing riff distortion and sizzling high pitched crying leads, to take wistful vocal hope into an uplifting, shared vision of “The Moors.”
