PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Oakland, CA folk /rock /indie pop band fronted by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yea-Ming Chen, featuring Eóin Galvin (Hoxton Mob, Readyville) on lead guitar and lap steel, Ryli colleagues Rob Good (The Goods, Ryli) on bass and Luke Robbins (Ryli, R.E. Seraphin) on drums, aka Yea-Ming and The Rumours “Paper Doll” first single from the fourth studio album “Residue” [Dandy Boy Records]
Intoxicating Americana-infused hazy, droney pop from the Bay Area group, where the slightly masculine, Nico-esque, low yet powerful and elegant Yea-Ming’s vocal delivery, as usual, sweeps us into its magnetic and moving flow. “Paper Doll” dives into the fear, distress, and resentment that arise when someone tries to make or sculpt another, against their will, into their ideal person. Tight, punchy drum fills and shimmering strummed guitars shake and swell, aside reverberating, nostalgic tendrils of lap-steel, to immerse sincere, gloomy female vocals, backed by soft, cool hums, with an uncanny sense of anxiety and bitterness, “I don’t want to be here.”
- Kalmar, Sweden lo-fi /noise pop /shoegaze /indie rock project of Jens Fransson, a former member of Sack Lunch (2017-2019), aka Trash Ratio “Community Kicks” single
Straightforward, heartfelt, and stripped-down fuzzy indie rock, stylistically very ’90s from the Swedish musician, chock full of shivering ringing distortion, and slow dripping wistful melodies layered with a poignant, wiry sprawl of painful leads, against sincere, sorrowful yet hopeful male vocals, reconnecting with a disillusioned life after a distant existence.
- Mexico City Neopsychedelia /Shoegaze band led by Javier Mendoza, Endlesss “Retroceder” from the upcoming EP “Late Reflections” [Shore Dive Records]
Still a couple of tracks teasing the full EP from the Mexican outfit’s both gritty and atmospheric heady fusion of lo-fi neo-psychedelia and ’90s shoegaze. “Retroceder” wobbles through Madchester-tinged, shuffling grooves and thick, droning bass lines, awash in dusty, grungy in-built guitar tones, made of crunchy riffs, reverberating sharp stabs, and a final poignant soar of wailing distortion, that scrapes and melts away airy layers of soft vocal melancholia.
