PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • French jangle /dream pop /indie pop band from Paris, Pale Spectres “Supermarket Love” from “Better Than Love” EP (Third of the label’s 2025 CDr EP series) [Too Good To Be True]

Breezy, sun-dappled and refined indie pop from the Parisian outfit delivers, amid hazy melancholy and restrained euphoria, a slow-burning outpouring of warm snaking basslines, flowing yet slightly abrasive insistent shimmery riffs and nostalgic echoing sparkling reverberations wrapped around dreamy elated vocals declaring love for a woman he met in the supermarket.

  • Canadian ambient /dream pop /shoegaze collaboration between musicians Jonathan Relph and James Callan, aka Indoor Voices x Prepare My Glider “Colours, All Around” 2-track single

From the joint effort by the Canadian atmospheric Shoegaze soundscapers, we can only expect surreal immersions in deeply suggestive mesmerizing realms, doused in otherworldly sensory aural resonances. “Colours, All Around” stirs heavy plodding percussions and endless swelling bass pulses, to spur a slow swirling saturation of refracting and hazy atmospheric reverb-drenched guitar textures, distilling subtle dissonant, magnetic spirals that fluctuate with, feint to the ear, heartfelt vocals, gently yet powerfully radiating beauty-inspired hope from beneath an enveloping sentient expanse of contemplative stirring nostalgia.

  • Turin, Italy indie rock /jangle-pop act (FKA Smile), THE WENDS “Irony” single [We Were Never Being Boring Collective]

Last time, in a rush or perhaps simply due to my insanity, I didn’t notice, but from the title, it was easy to guess, that our favorite fellow Turin-based group’s single collection contained three unreleased tracks. One of these, just dropped as a single, “Irony”, moves on well-oiled coordinates, but which are difficult to tire of, played with the usual straightforwardness and ardent passion that exist between brisk drums, melodic meandering bass lines, and piercing, ringing Husker Du or Replacements-like guitar riffs, rippled with jangling swells, to fuel distinctive Stipes-que raspy vocals, swaying between urgently spoken words and emotional angsty cries, to explore the tragic human condition of spiritual disconnection.
