PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Belfast, UK alt-rock /heavy shoegaze solo project from former Virgins‘ guitarist/songwriter, Michael Smyth, aka SILK “Clementine” 2nd single from upcoming debut mini-LP “Auralux”

Massive and engrossing walls of sound, in the proper way, coalesce in a heap of cathartic, emotive intensity in the second single from the Belfast shoegazers. A resounding, ebullient barrage of blaring feedback and raucous reactive emotions from the onset insistently pounds, overflows, and assaults, amid a brief reflective strummed respite, nervous, airy, obsessive vocals, with relentless, tightly wound dramatic spirals of fear and desperation.

  • London-based Anglo-French dream pop /art pop-rock duo Nonsense Rats “The Night is Quiet” second single

A surreal and nostalgic slice of dreamcore pop, the second single from the newcomer Anglo-French duo, about the dreams of the simple life told to a person in stories, elicits soft pulsing drum patterns under ringing abrasive strummed guitars to carry sad, high-pitched, airy female vocals, of wistful anxiety, through sulking and longing spirals of vibrant melancholic keys, evoking the sense of alienation, loneliness, and the desire to disappear that comes from living in a warzone-like environment.

  • Toronto, Ontario emo /shoegaze /post-rock /indie rock /dreamo quartet Group Therapy “Little Warning” single

Blending elements of Midwest Emo, Post-Rock and Shoegaze into a distinctive sound enhanced with a compelling, sparkling guitar work and captivating vocalizations amid a heady alternation of contemplative spaces and swirling dynamics. Layers of dreamy soulful female vocals billow through a vibrant rambling, driven by stumbling drums and chunky bass throbs, of sinuous, lush spirals of arpeggiated, tinkling guitar lines, laced with convulsive, crashing riffs and spindly, weeping leads brimming with chaotic emotions, to explore how a rupture can occur with “Little Warning.”
