Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – MARCH #09-23

Hugh C Knowles, ca. 1910

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Swedish “orthodox indie pop” duo Gustav Tranback (Paper Hearts, Dismal Plight) and Mikael Carlsson (The Honeydrips, Dorotea) AKA Salt Lake Alley “Bank Robber” (The Clash cover) single on Shelflife Records

Swedish duo take The Clash‘s working-class punk classic from the filthy late 70s/early 80s concrete jungle of Brixton or Kingston inhabited by a strain of Rude Boys, hoodlums, and gangsters and levitate it ‘eight miles high’ in a multicolored ‘fifth dimension’, wrapped in a flamboyant dress of shimmering jingle jangle 12-string guitar chords, and laced with flashy Uilleann pipes-like flourishes, as if The Byrds had met The Pogues in a ‘Dirty Old Town’, for a mesmerizing surreal reverie of bittersweet nostalgia.

  • Sheffield, UK indie rock/synth wave /dream pop band, Rehearsed Living “Facades” new single

It’s been about a year since the multifaceted Dream Pop /Indie Rock band from Sheffield, led by Steven Jones, wasn’t sending me a new song, the new one combines as usual both vibrant and reflective dreamy and nostalgic moods through rich emotional vocal heartache that rises and falls in breathless melancholia against a sparkling backdrop of syncopated drum beats, sonorous lithe post-punk basslines, enveloping bright keyboard sweeps, and piercing, obsessive guitar melodies, to elicit deep disappointment at the hands of shifting “Facades.”

  • Basque Country noise rock /shoegaze band based in Bilbao, ARIMA “Oroigarri bat” second preview from forthcoming LP

The Bilbao based band plays a refined and mesmerizing brand of shoegaze that headily wobbles between the off-kilter loud distortions of MBV and the sweeping dreamy introspections of Slowdive with noise-rock loud outbursts. The new single ebbs and flows with wistful emotional vibrancy through dazzling reverb-strewn fuzzed-out riffs that intersect and ripple with sparkling and vibrating poignant guitar strains over stumbling drum beats, and rumbling bass lines, whilst tragically beautiful female cries fall desperately into hazy obsessive memories of heartache and despair.
