PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Indonesian neo-acoustic / indie pop singer-songwriter GREY “A Brown Dog Without Love” [forfun.cookies]
A charming neo-acoustic number from Indonesia with a refined and airy Astrud Gilberto-flavoured ecstatic panache, hard to resist. Blanketed in a lush, nostalgic and emotional introspection, the tune swings on a crisp, vibrant percussive carpet in perpetual sinuous syncopation, while a dripping, wistful layering of fluting keyboard motifs alongside sparkling strummed and plucked guitar melodies frames timid, dreamy female vocals, anxiously wondering about love.
- Fukuoka, Japan bedroom pop /indie pop /noise /dream pop solo project Happypills “psalm” from “happypills (dream)” EP
A welcome comeback for the Japanese DIY bedroom recording solo musician, on hiatus since October 2024, purveyor of melancholic, dreamy, and washed-out indie pop with surf inflexions and keen melodic sensibilities.
In “Psalm,” a hypnotic mechanical drum machine drives a vibrant and hazy, swelling bittersweet aura woven by glistening reverb-filled guitar melodies, layered with ghost-like synths, to cradle and heal, pierced by insistent distorted flourishes, wistful dreamy vocals, longing for a rainbow colored sun, with shedding sadness and emergent hope.
- Brighton, UK Indie Rock /Post Rock /Dream Pop /Shoegaze music project of Shane Speed, aka Sea Of Days “Ignite” single
Last week, we featured the heartfelt emotionality of Last Days of Rome‘s DIY indie rock songwriting. A likewise soul-stirring intensity, albeit more subdued and contained, pervades the reverberated shoegazing dreamy sound by the Brighton-based musician, amid atmospheric expansions and breezes of profound melancholy, combined with passionate singing and an intimate lyrical approach. The beautiful lyrics paint a romantic, natural setting around calm, connected, thankful male vocals that glide and soar through lilting soft strums, in an embracing, reflective starlit sky of swelling, ringing guitar flares, enjoying a perfect outdoor evening on a blanket with a loved one.
