PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Oxnard, CA Chicano /dream-pop /indie pop group formed in 2002, Maria “My Valentine” single [YAY! Records]

The back-on-track Oxnard Chicano group delivers a glistening indie pop stunner finely crafted in a Brighter, Field Mice, or The Smiths style. A song about the urgent intensity felt when one first falls in love, sparks off bouncy drums and snaking humming basslines that pulse underneath bubbling and glistening bright guitars, weaving nimble whirls of jangling riffs over beautifully lush heartfelt vocals crooning for “My Valentine.”

  • Adelaide, Australia shoegaze /electronic /noise /dream pop collaborative solo project, ephemerons “Astral Drone” from the 2-track single ” Droughtbreaker / Astral Drone”

Nuanced 2-track single from Southern Australia, teeters between last week’s JAMC-infused crunchy noise-pop riffs, to explore instead mesmeric droning Spiritualized bents through slightly strident, distorted, reverberating guitar textures and bubbling low ends, floating in an elongated space-out meditative headspace of contemplative vocals that ebb and flow in emotional wide-eyed disconnection.

  • Amsterdam 5-piece jangly dream pop band Biatlón “Evergreen” debut single

Debut single filled with sinuously enveloping and shimmering dream-pop from Amsterdam’s 5-piece, that sways over steady mid-tempo rhythms and bright crystalline arpeggios, glittering in yearning floating ripples, layered with dazzling swirling keyboards, to swell and tinkle wistfully over distant, vibrant yet dreamy vocals, lost and alone in an endless summertime mood.
