Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – FEBRUARY 2024 – #07-24

Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn New York, 1978

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Philadelphia, PA ambient /dream pop /shoegaze one-man band DRAMAMINE “Written on a Napkin” first single off of upcoming EP “When the Time Comes”

Dramamine’s new single built a contemplative, and achingly melancholic aura through a shimmery flickering sea of light skeletal strums, and glistening echo-filled guitar melodies, lilted by soft stumbling percussions, to gently glimmer and veil lost and lonely layered vocals, longing for home amid a tragic breakup.

  • Russian alternative /indie rock /jangle pop /shoegaze /noise-pop rock band Lurve “THIS IS MY PUNCHLINE!!!” single from the upcoming LP via Spirit Goth Records & Anchor Lights

Seemingly gone from the early days of jangle guitars, the Russian band is increasingly keen to not repeat itself every time with irrepressible energy and a healthy dose of swagger. A slow speed primal intro opens into a sweeping high-speed roll of frenetic humming and bouncing bass loops, obsessive pain-fueled guitar melodies, and urgent pounding beats, to swallow angsty, distressed vocals, chanting “I don’t care this is not my life” in a relentless distorted high-pitched overflow.

  • Tucson, AZ lo-fi /twee /indie pop /power pop home-recorded solo project Dimitriam “Rug” off upcoming cassette album “Amphora”

To crown a weekend of pleasant discoveries, especially on the pop side, one of the most enjoyable is the strictly lo-fi 4-track recording longtime project from Tulsa nestled in the best, seemingly prominently British, DIY outsider pop tradition, made of off-kilter no-frills songs, steeped in slightly psychedelic flair, folk undertones and ’60s nostalgia, that seems to combine the intimate heartfelt depth of a songwriter with the bristly dynamism of a rock band. Staring down at the “Rug” to avoid eye contact, the song flows as if by magic shrouded in bittersweet jingly keyboard melodies, energetic swayed strums, and urgent scratchy motorik beats, to carry nostalgic vocal angst into a disconnected droning stream of disruptive frequencies.
