Weekly Shoegaze/ Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips #7
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin dream pop/post-punk/shoegaze 4-piece OPERATIONS “Fog Museum” title track from the debut album “Fog Museum”
One of the most pleasant discoveries of the weekend is without a doubt the 11-track first LP by up and coming Milwaukee four-piece Operations, superbly showcasing a heady alchemy between the dual guitars interplay of crystal clear, swirling harmonies that, over the solid backbone of a vigorous rhythm section, chase each other, merging hypnotically, to vanish, swirl and collide, building mostly meditative sun-drenched hazy soundscapes lulled by dreamy alternate male/female vocals, but it’s definitely when the pace and chords turn slightly more restless, such as the splendid ‘Temporary Movement’ or particularly the title track ‘Fog Museum’, pervaded by subtle nods to The Feelies, that the album reaches its heights, just the icing on the cake for an overall more than convincing brilliant debut.
- Bay Area‘s Dream Pop / Shoegaze / Post-Punk 4-piece of Gray Tolhurst (Gray Tolhurst, Coo Coo Birds), Jeremie Ruest (Cerf Volant, Your Friend, Lavender Blush), Justin Oronos (Solip), and Lauren Grubb (Minipop, To The Wedding), TOPOGRAPHIES “Veils” from the new cassette EP “Difference & Repetition” on Dream Recordings
Bay Area quartet is back kept honing their stark yet enveloping layering shoegazing sound, constantly adding coldwave and post-punk nuances, highlighting the band’s distinctive knack for both blissful shoegaze vibrancy and infectious melodic quality shrouded in thoughtful lyrics.
- Lucerne, Switzerland ethereal/shoegaze/dream pop project of Andy Jossi featuring Krissy Vanderwoude on vocals, THE CHURCHHILL GARDEN “Light” new and last single from forthcoming double vinyl album “Heart and Soul”.
A gorgeous blend of harmony and distortion, both sooth and invigorate the senses with beautifully carefree ethereal female vocals soaring atop abrasive layers of noise, embedded with sparkling guitar melodies and triumphant synth chords, to form burstingly contagious atmospherics enhancing the positive upbeat lyrics about friendship, putting a smile on the subconscious hum burning within. Perfect to introduce the duo’s upcoming double vinyl LP. (C.G.).
