PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • UK lofi /ambient /dream pop /shoegaze solo project Geneva Drive “Sub Rosa” single

Another delicious new single of immersive, atmospheric, home-recorded shoegaze introspection, where calm, wistful vocals float gently on the hypnotic pulse of shuffling drum patterns, surrounded by hazy, sheer guitar layers of reverberant, oneiric luminescence, wondering, suspiciously, about what lies at the heart of another’s love.

  • Brighton, UK C86 /jangle indie pop DIY trio formed in 2002, Assistant “Overwhelming (The Photocopies remix)” from “Assistant / The Photocopies” split single for Cancer Research UK

Fine purveyors of upbeat, passionate, and heartfelt DIY indie pop, Assistant & The Photocopies join forces for a fundraising split EP, remix swap included, with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK. In the busy, colourful The Photocopies rework of “Overwhelming”, urgent rhythms and energetic strumming build a radiating, lively nostalgia to surround introspective, angsty female vocal dreaminess with obsessive tinkling cycles of doubt, longing and desire, “But, I got to have you.”  The Assistant maquillage of the breezy, soulful and reflective “The Great Comeback”, ushers snaky groovy bass pulses, shimmery guitar chords and wooly liquid organ-like swirls around hope-filled, anxious vocals, excited about making a comeback yet shamed by the high prices.

  • Munich, Germany alt-rock /shoegaze duo Blume 3000 “Kaputter Film” single [New Basement]

Certainly doesn’t lack intensity and hypnotic tension the “not shoegaze” sound by the newcomer Bavarian duo whose harsh, surreal and clangorous slow burner, “Kaputter Film”, triggers heavy thumping drum beats that ceaselessly fuel thick, crushing distorted guitar riffs, simultaneously mesmeric and aggressive, to clatter, tremble, and insistently jag, conveying emotive weight and intensity to melancholic, angry vocals, turning to powerful, airy radiations, with fierce, high-pitched surges of screechy and discordant emotions.
