PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Wells, UK  jangle /indie pop /guitar pop project Hurry up, Gregory! “My Darling, where are you now?” single [Back To Somerset]

“Back To Somerset” is a brand new label that came out of nowhere, dedicated to “reviving the vibrant era of P!O!P!”, that classic, very British sound we do love the most. A tenner or so releases, almost simultaneously, seemingly without social media, made us suspicious, as with The Parker Posies, of possible AI-generated music, even if it does not sound like it. One of the most interesting monikers, with Butch Cassidy’s Cousins, is the bright and uplifting Sarah-Record-esque meets Prefab Sprout single by Hurry up, Gregory!, where emotional male vocals, deeply long and reminisce, with high echoes and softly sung baritone spoken words, in heartfelt harmony with the nostalgia, joy, and wistfulness woven by stroked strums and bittersweet shimmery guitar melodies.

  • Canadian ethereal /dream pop /electronic music project of Sabarah Pilon, aka DenMother “I’m Sweet” single

The longstanding electronic DIY moniker of singer/songwriter Sabarah Pilon returns with a stripped-down, hypnotic electronic song about wanting to roll around in the leaves and get dirty with a stranger, to build a quirky, haunting, slow-mo ambience that conjures a lingering sense of sadness and angst. A melancholic, stringent, repetitive pace of thudding heart-beating percussion patterns, smooth, strained, glowing synth melodies and slivers of vibrant, tinkly reflections, softly sway seamlessly together with breathy, fearful vocals gently seducing a stranger with longing and desire.

  • Seattle, WA 4-piece alternative-rock /shoegaze band 44go “Revolver” third single

Last year’s Smashing Pumpkins-inflected debut single, “Mockstarr”, on BC took us, with a slight delay, straight to the Seattle foursome’s recent lysergic-infused Whirr-meets-Britpop third release, driven by vigorously shuffling drum beats and lively pulsing bass lines, churning a simmering buzzing cauldron of crunchy, fuzz-laden, sprawling guitar riffs and screechy swells around restless, elated male vocals, drowned in an acid trip about drifting, moods, and choices.
