PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Tokyo, Japan dream-pop /shoegaze band KILDREN “December” single

As the title suggests a single released at the end of last year, almost in synch with a promising debut EP, as to set a new path, the Tokyo band ably harbors the spirit of the shoegaze heritage, rooted in a heady balance between melody and noise, where the guitar textures are sometimes aggressive and scratchy, sometimes dreamy and ethereal, suffused with the vibrant calm essence of a fragile female voice. In the Winter, when time slows, a dull weight sinks in, causing angsty female vocals to brood in still isolation, then a cathartic surge of piercing screechy frequencies and heavy grinding distortions pulverize the heaviness, and a cool layer rises up, leaving the worries below.

  • Brighton, UK indie rock /dream pop /shoegaze new solo project by Shore Dive label head honcho N.P. Wardell (FKA Beatastic), Marry Me Marie “In the hard times”, debut single from the forthcoming first LP

Released earlier in the new year, “In the hard times” is the first soul-stirring glimpse of the seemingly enigmatic new solo project by Shore Dive label head honcho N.P. Wardell, blends Shoegaze (Smashing Pumpkins, Drop Nineteens), Indie Rock (Pixies), and Dream Pop (Beach House), harnessing mechanical programmed beats and gritty droning bass lines, to build a heavy, grounding force under vibrant textures of shivering guitar melodies, twinkling keys and layers of gentle, airy vocals, to bring forth a harmonious blanket of calm, support, and unity.

  • South Wales, UK lo-fi noise pop /shoegaze project of musician James Cubitt, aka WINTER SUN “Honey” single

Dizzy MBV-tinged vibrant emotional swirler intertwines distorted guitars, restrained noise, and bittersweet dreamy melodies, layering a strummed haze with aching swells of slightly jarring resonances, causing a woozy strain of blurred feelings that float around whispery male vocals, wrapped in urgent layers of brittle anxiety.
