PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Berlin-based cold wave /synthwave /synth-pop /minimal synth duo of Ryan Ambridge (Synths/Programming) and Alison Lewis aka Zanias (Vocals/Synths), aka LINEA ASPERA “Mycelium” single via Fleisch Records
A highly welcome Linea Aspera‘s surprise comeback with the duo’s distinctive minimal and obsessive lush synthetic tones through an emotionally ridden love song in which Alison’s entrancing aching vocals glide on a slow pulsing skeletal carpet of dry hypnotic beats and plucked, icy-bright resonant arpeggiated synth loops, awash by desolate gauzy swells, to conjure overflowing longing and regret.
- Berlin-based synth-pop /post-punk project of electronic producer and guitarist Anton Koba, Routine ”I Will Never Give You Flowers” single
A beat-driven dance-inducing love song about being extra touchy feely ceaselessly bounces on a floor of buzzy bass throbs under which frenetic shivering sheets of synth strains swirl over urgent obsessive vocals, rising into distorted high frequencies of fire and ice.
- Eskilstuna, Sweden electronic /synth-pop duo Louise & Peter Marchione, aka Coppia “Nowhere” single via Modernshortcuts
Clearly taking a cue from both the timeless Synthpop melancholy of Depeche Mode and the most elegant, melodic and anthemic late 90/early 00s electro-dark sound of Apoptygma Berzerk, VNV Nation and Covenant, the new single by Swedish duo, in Italo name and in fact, Coppia, unleashes magnetic swirls of dramatic synth riffs, grounded by hypnotic mid-tempo beats and taut undulating low ends, rising into a frenzy atop haunted, aching vocals, and high celestial cries, foolishly living in denial to avoid fate.
