Weekly Post-Punk / Darkwave / Dark Synth Tips – OCTOBER #43-22

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Scottish goth /post-punk /dark cabaret /avant-garde musical project from Edinburgh, This Sacred Flower “Conclave” from the EP “Effigies” on Sacred Realm Records
“A dark surreal and tribal musical trip of the magical and macabre” lets us know the Scottish band and, right from the start, their heady and ritual sound pulses and rolls with organic, atavistic, and shamanic intensity over hypnotic tinny tribalistic percussions, swathed by uncanny and dramatic synth loops, whilst strong, empowering vocals draw wisdom from the spiritual realm to set a mood of courage and enlightenment for the battle that lies ahead. Echoing at times the ancestral esoterism of Virgin Prunes or early Current 93, This Sacred Flower deftly haunts the shadows between hallucinated dark cabaret and eerie gothic muse.

I adhere 100% to the manifesto describing the inspirations that inform the atmospheric and melodic New wave /Post-Punk sound of the British band Parramatta, although sadly I didn’t grow up listening to John Peel, just due to geo reasons and pre-internet era. Inspired by a dream dinner party with Thomas Hardy, Stan Laurel & David McComb, “Penny Drop” imbues chilled intoxicating vibes through smooth syncopated rhythms, liquid dazzling icy keyboard stabs, scorching, whining guitar reverberations, and bewitching vocal hypnotism into a stirring mind-altering expansion of curious lyrical introspections, to evoke the subtly oppressive, poignant solemnity of the Triffids.

The one-man-band from France returns after an unusually long break with a thick and restless The Cure “Disintegration” era-like new single replete with heady, dark, and oppressive vibes, steadily building pulsing tension through downtrodden drum beats, forsaken grinding riffs, achingly glistening reverberating guitar strains, and obsessive bass lines, surrounded by eerie dazzling synth swirls, to encapsulate sluggish echoed vocal disconnections weighted by gloom-laden moods.
