One day only digital download a week ago, now back, at least on Soundcloud, the intensely pulsating dance-inducing “Skinwalker” from Estonian dark chanteuse with those irresistible, driving and menacing Underworld-style vibrating bassline that unremittingly builds and builds, fueled by heart-racing beats, over beautifully haunted female cries and blissfully piercing vocal harmonies to form a relentless agony and ecstasy of cold ‘sublime malaise’.

Karl Kave is the experimental and more raw side-project of Carlo Onda, where he allows himself to roam freely through his own inspiration, always having in mind the heritage of the cold, oblique and minimal post-punk sound of NDW and the Swiss/German wave of the 80s, and this, in the end, is what intrigues and slowly grows on me the most. This week a pounding, hypnotic and swirling instrumental, swept in eerie spatial bright synthetic explorations and deep digging bassline vibrations (‘I Vacation’ on Soundcloud) and the real single propelled by lashing mechanical off-tempo rhythms to trigger his signature detached deep enigmatic vocals that sulk and brood into droning vortices of zipping and swishing synths. Enough to write down the name KK for those who haven’t done it yet.

80s tinged neon-lit noir-ish synthpop in a fine balance between moody and dim enveloping synthetic sound and organically seductive ethereal vocalizations, where ominously hearty low bass oscillations tremble amid warm blooming swathes and bright flashing synth chords, punctuated by tinkling wistful piano notes, coalesce in synchronized harmony with emotional breathless female vocals, that swirl sassy caresses into the fretful longing of uncertain bliss.
