PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Brisbane, Australian art-rock/coldwave/post-punk quartet Nite Fields “Not Your Time” the first single from ”A Voyeur Makes No Mark” limited edition album out April 6 on Lost Race (200 vinyl) and Perfect Aesthetics (50 cassettes).
The great news of the week is the unexpected return, after almost 5 years hiatus, of the Brisbane band with its dark, cold, sometimes suspended and hazy atmospheres with a brand new absorbing coldwave number, somehow approachable only to “Fill The Void” from their debut LP, where their distinctive shoegaze guitar leanings, to which we were accustomed, shine in the background, as an emotional achingly counterpoint to the soothing breathy vocals that dangerously float over pulsing trance-inducing enveloping rhythms and low buzzing synth drones, spreading charm, mystery and teasing swagger.

For a Seattle that is increasingly colouring in dark hues, Profit Prison, Final Body, Medusa Stare, Suffering For Kisses are just the first names that come to mind, Minneapolis / St. Paul ex-pat Hallows are yet another synth-driven darkwave male/female duo from recent times, delivering a dazzling and endearingly vibrant precursor from their debut EP, with an infectiously danceable backbone, charged by a densely propulsive electro-leaning web of droning bassline, poignant icy synths and pummeling beats, over moody and haunting vocals, whose alternating tones in the same song, makes it even more sensuous and captivating, definitely above average.

Brand new Peruvian project debuts with a fast-paced melodious and dark electro-punk tune defined by obsessive swirling synths, ominous bassline, hypnotic rhythms and intensely anxious vocals, into a jittery yet restrained, tense and energetic vortex of emotionally threatening and mesmeric dizzy electronics. A promising first step.
