It’s all about a question of hopeless tension and fatalistic release, the first teaser from Crystalline Stricture‘s forthcoming album, defined by the clang and clatter of an insistently tight drum programming and ceaselessly sonorous buzzing low ends, stabbed by stark icy slivers, ruthlessly bounces and hits as to stress the inescapable end, taking, through a flickering dramatic rush of eerie glowing synth strains, sad, bitter vocal resignation into spoken words of quiet darkness.

Two-track digital and limited 7″ vinyl, sold at the upcoming gigs only, for the South-Western German outfit, which, as last year’s brilliant debut album showed, deftly encapsulates the sombrest tones and introspective moods from the 80s Coldwave and Post-punk, injected with a distinctive “Angst-pop” sensibility. Thick grey-ish mists surround deeply felt, desperate vocals, next to evocative melancholic synth arps, murmuring moody basslines, and frigid, stiff, at times, danceable, drum machines of geometric precision, to bring forth minimalistic, wintry, and viscerally wretched atmospheric landscapes, replete with barren desolation and reflective starkness.

Already featured a couple of times in previous weekly roundups, also with an unusual cover of Sebadoh’s “Soul and Fire”, the enigmatic DIY lo-fi ‘oldwave’ solo project from Madrid delivers one of his best singles so far. An oppressive abyss is “Always There”, waiting, like a thief in the night, to try to steal your soul, triggering urgent evocative melancholic moods arising from the persistent escapist interaction between murky hypnotic throbbing rhythms and epic, swirling synth overlays to surround wistful spoken word vocals with a shivering radiating surge of hope.
