Weekly Post-Punk // Darkwave // Dark Synth Tips – JANUARY 2025 – #04-25

Every Tuesday EXHYDRIA Radio // poster by Nassia Var

It is the 8th consecutive season for Mike D (longtime editor of the team WL//WH) on-air, and some things have changed. There is no more Loud Cities radio show, but Wave After Wave radio program on the amazing new internet station ExhȳdriaRadio“embrace the extraordinaire.”

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Milwaukee, WI new gothic /post-punk /new wave collective (current and past members of Tigernite, Devils Teeth, Fight Dice and Faux Fiction) led by Eric Arsnow, Seances – “Weighted” from upcoming LP “Power Is A Phantom” [Triple Eye Industries]

Milwaukee‘s collective pulls out a thrilling amalgam of 80s-tinged Post-punk anthemic melodrama, dappling a gripping and sparkling soundscape of insistent beats, snaky humming basslines, buzzy melancholic synths along with ragged and piercing atmospheric guitar riffs, to carve anthemic hooks of epic bleeding passion that swirl around an anxiety-laden baritone vocal, injecting acceptance, accountability, and empathy into brooding spoken words and soaring heartfelt support.

  • San Francisco, CA electronic /post-punk /synthpop /synthwave act SLICKTROSYNTH “My Heart” single

Framed by a Victorian style cover artwork suggesting arcane Dungeon Synth sceneries, the Bay Area solo project SLICKTROSYNTH, if likewise replete with atmospheric and fanciful synthesizers, explores instead surreal and melancholic synth-pop-wave realms, as encapsulated by the new single, “My Heart”, where, on light urgent beats, a calm yet anxious, vulnerable vocal, surrounded by a vaporous haze of shivering wistful synth swirls, strives to let go, find peace, and cause no harm.

  • Swedish coldwave /darkwave /synthpop project of Lars Voith aka VOITH ”My Shadowblade” title track of the ”My Shadowblade” EP

A new 5-track EP by the Swedish solo project that draws from a wide array of moody and atmospheric dark music stylings, on which stands out the metaphysical Dark Wave title track, included in a massive Animal Shelter compilation a few years ago, I missed somehow, re-proposed here in a slightly different version. On an underpinning of steady punchy drum programming and whirring low ends, excruciating aching guitar melodies and mystical glowing synths somberly cocoon and desperately swirl atop gentle haunted vocals of pain finding comfort in, and longing for, the shared sorrows of their shadow.
