PICKS OF THE WEEK:
Utrecht, Netherlands shoegaze /new wave /synth-pop act Decadesthétique “Veins” from forthcoming second LP “Mannequin” 12″ vinyl [Chronos Defied]
On the verge of releasing his sophomore LP, the Dutch one-man band’s second excerpt casts enticing flashes of nostalgia-drenched Synth-Pop pulled from the angst-strained and gloomier mid-80s Tears For Fears and early Talk Talk, shaped by the stirring melancholy of bright synths swirling atop haunted vocals of echoey wistful agony, battling with a tension of feeling no more than useful.
- California goth /post-punk band (FKA Nass Zuruck), EYELIDSS “Behind the Smile” single
After a rather sparing first year of releases, Californian lo-fi post-punk outfit starts the new year with a bitter single that urgently unfolds on loose-limbed drumming and ascending humming low ends, interspersed by persistent sharp, sparkling guitar arpeggios and tight rattling riffs, on which stand out punk-fueled shapeshifting emotional-ridden vocals of brisk choppy shouts, celestial howls, and sad, struggling spoken words, hiding behind a fake smile of depression.
- Orlando, FL Minimal Synth solo project, Earth Fault “More Myself” single
A message, keep trying, keep growing, and keep going, underlies the more anxious and neurotic second single from Florida‘s Coldwave/Synth-Pop solo project, which bounces along tight snares and droning bass undulations stabbed through by a strain of tinkling plucky pads and eerie twisted synth riffs, whilst a vocal array of urgent anxious cries and low shadowy spoken words explores self-hatred, lack of purpose, and the painful process of healing.
