PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • JD Twitch (Optimo) ‘This Was Belgium 1987-89‘ (2 hours of New Beat favourites)

A precious, quite comprehensive and personal, for this reason even more interesting, ‘summa’ of the New Beat, born and exploded in Belgium over the biennium 1987-88, but still so influential nowadays, from the refined musical taste of JD Twitch, one half of legendary Glaswegian duo and clubbing institution Optimo.

  • Berlin-based industrial techno project of DJ and producer Michael Wollenhaupt (aka Ancient Methods), aka, The Loud Age– “Die Unzeitgemäßen (Sur la maladie part. 2)” from “The Second Siren” album on his own label Persephonic Sirens

Amazingly adorned by an enigmatic sepia cover-artwork, German electronic visionary delivers seven atmospheric and pulsating, equally entrancing and mysterious, industrial-tinged techno trips, infused with natural drama and melancholy, shrouded in arcane historical haze.

  • Greek psychedelic folk electronic producer Aggelos Baltas (aka Dream Weapons and Fantastikoi Hxoi), Anatolian Weapons feat. Anna vs June – “Athanato Nero (Edit)” off of V/A “V Is For Vision” compilation LP – celebrating five years of Glasgow‘s Invisible Inc. label.

I treasure the Greek producer’s unpredictable and ever-changing DJ sets, that beat after pulsing beat wrap around and expand on you, until relentlessly absorbing you into mysterious and transcendental otherworldy sonic mazes, vibrating of Middle Eastern flavours, krautrock distortions, hypnotic drones, acidic inflexions, cosmic echoes and slow-mo to downtempo entrancing trippy rhythms. The collaboration with fellow Greek experimental electronic artist/singer Anna Papaioannou, aka Anna vs June, couldn’t have been better evidence of the above. All the sampler to celebrate 5 years of the ace Glasgow label Invisible Inc. brimming with such off-kilter mind-bending brilliance.

  • Bogotá, Colombia dark electronic producer Franco (one-half of Vltra Delta Drive and Antimateria founder), Non Punire – “La Epifanía” off of V/A “Cold Light, Low Tide” free compilation on brokntoys

For the last track of the free sampler from brokntoys, given the name, I expected an Italian producer, but instead, my pleasant surprise, is the well-known longtime South American ‘techno agitator’ Franco St with a buzzing and icy-synth expansive slo-mo atmospheric electro dirge, dancing hopelessly over grey, desolate and clanging post-industrial urban wastelands.
