WL//WH Video Premiere: PROPTER HOC Looks to the Unconventional Past for Modern Inspiration in “George Eliot’s Husband” (Official Video)

WL//WH Premiere  PROPTER HOC

The name Propter Hoc comes from an essay by artist Martha Rosler, where the phrase is used in the context of photography as fine art, that it might only be considered ‘art ’ if that was the intention before creating it.

WL//WH welcomes the New Wave solo project of the Glasgow, Scotland based artist and writer J. A. Harrington, under his nom de plume of  Propter Hoc, back to the blog with a premiere of the Official Video for “George Eliot’s Husband”, the sixth song on Propter Hoc’s incoming  10-track album, “Seduction and Betrayal”, due to be released tomorrow, March 27, 2025, via Cold Transmission Music.

Propter Hoc delivers a stirring and nostalgic blend of 80s-influenced dark Post-Punk and sparkling, catchy, sharp-witted strains of Synth-Pop sonics with referential lyrics that draw from poetry, literature, philosophy and other sources to connect with others through a sense of expanded diegesis.

“George Eliot’s Husband” takes its title from Elizabeth Hardwick’s mid to late twentieth-century essay about the unconventional relationship between author George Eliot (real name Mary Anne Evans) and George Henry Lewes.

An intoxicating emotional excursion dictated by thumping drum kicks and ominous gurgling bass lines, ceaselessly bounces with the immersive dazzling vibrancy of flashing and radiating multi-tonal synth strains, vibrant mercurial melodies, and dramatic orchestral swathes, while deeply alluring and mesmeric baritone vocals encourage another to, “gimme the word.”

In the Official Video, you will see Propter Hoc sail across the open sea through a shifting ambience of sun and storms whilst performing “George Eliot’s Husband” with New Wave flair. The journey, encircled with white swan symbolism, travels toward a mysterious locale of beautiful mist-covered islands while sharks and hidden treasures lie just below the surface, to explore taking flight to an unknown romantic horizon.

Propter Hoc‘s new 10-track studio album, “Seduction and Betrayal”, is coming out tomorrow, March 27, 2025, on ltd. Vinyl 12″/CD & Digital formats, via Cold Transmission Music.
