WL//WH Premiere KOBALIN
Kobalin, the Neue Neue Deutsche Welle/Nu Wave solo project of Hamburg-based artist Laura Müller, also known for her other ethereal darkwave venture, Undinyx, besides being the frontwoman of the post-punk band Grundeis, anticipates a 4-track EP, coming out later in 2026, with the DIY official music video for the second single, “Blei,” which WL//WH is pleased to premiere.
The German saying “Schwer wie Blei”, heavy as lead, refers to a mental state. The lyrics describe a cold, foggy, empty, weighted headspace where sense, sight, and sanity are lost; bringing forth the question “Is that all there is?”
Moody, dark and disconnected, “Blei” revolves around skewed, plangent, and iridescent synth layers, desolately swirling atop a ticking backdrop fueled by the obsessive bleak drive of a humming, throbbing post-punk bassline, together with hypnotic mechanical snares, while wistful, ruminating vocals, backed by the expanding echoes of falling cries, drift endlessly in hopeless spirals of confusion and gloom.
In the DIY Official Music Video, Laura Müller performs “Blei” in a shower in sync with the soundtrack. She wears a torn, paint-stained white shirt and cut-out black leggings. The mood is intense and restless, as if she is fighting an inner demon. Later, the clothing burns on a miniature checkerboard mat in a ritualistic manner. Midway through, an optical illusion takes hold, wherein Müller and her inverted reflection struggle between unity and separation. Finally, a model of a brain is pulled across the snow-covered ground on a chain, like a heavy weight, until a strange disconnection occurs.
