WL//WH Video Premiere Death Of Codes
Death of Codes is the California-based solo Dark Synthwave project of electronic musician, music theorist, blogger and Crystal Cage collaborator, Meg Wilhoite.
WL//WH is pleased to Premiere the thought-provoking video for the dramatic and emotional single “Future”, taken from the forthcoming 3-track EP “Sunlight“, influenced by Ursula K. Le Guin’s intensely bleak fantasy novel “The Tombs of Atuan”, scheduled for release on October 2, 2020.
Written with synth programs created on Meg’s Microkorg and a synthesizer based on a sample of her voice, “Future” unravels slow, cold echoes that expand bleak horizons along ticking metronomic beats and light metallic tings, cutting through the deep demented bass line’s wicked droning vibrations, while sinister, asymmetrical synth notes flutter heavily amid beautifully pained high and airy female vocal’s atmospheric layering of tragic harmonies, that fade and decay into piercing sadness.
Daunting lyrics condemn humanity for “lifetimes burned for money” and the desolate future of shattered dreams that lies ahead.
Creative camera angles, directed by Lillyan Ling, conjure a sense of growing claustrophobia using the eerie, disquieting walls of a dollhouse under siege by Mother Nature. Light awakens the darkness, breathing life into a wasted shell of greed, while shadows distort the setting, causing elemental forces of Retribution to overpower and destroy lost objects abandoned by neglect and time.
The symbolism behind the block of wood is explained by Meg Wilhoite as a kind of “monolith”,
