Hailing from Belgrade, Serbia, Zastranienie is a dynamic duo formed by two highly strong individuals, Boško and Ida, feeling rather frustated from the messy world we live in.
The concept of Zastranienie is based on the theory of defamiliarization (better known as ‘Ostranenie’ to which Boško and Ida paraphrased their name), as conceived by Viktor Shklovsky, the Russian essayist.
Formed during summer of 2009, Zastranienie came up with the idea of creating virtually notorious but also a humourous project which will focus on audio-visual misconceptions of who they actually are or might be. Deliberately dismissing any ‘cult of personality’, they chose the musical concept as their ‘political’ ideology, a cabaret, preaching art phrases twisted into social issues.
Zastranienie is not a project or a band. It’s a manifesto with absolute freedom, humour and fun and without any reference points, or maybe just a few, Lazar Markovich Lissitzky aka El Lissitzky, Milena Dravić, Viktor Shklovsky and George Orwell, they might be.
In “Singularity” melodies are kept to a minimum in favour of the predominance of rhythm with a sort of punkish attitude. Stark and banging, it dishes out electrifying industrial harsh elements allowing no time to breath, filled with relentless, repetitive, pounding synchopated beats, booming bass, dark sinister synth and gritty vocal samples, retaining them off-kilter and warped enough to keep things more heady and brooding, providing the listener an exciting and invigorating aural assault.
The perfectly paired mesmerizing video, with its kaleidoscope imagery, opens doors to diverse perceptions and suggestions : the cosmos, how small we really are in the whole scope, just specs of microscopic dust…
Keep up with Zastranienie :
