Vienna-based, Turkey-native and world explorer experimental Post Punkers Cemgil Demirtas (Synthesizers & E-Bass) and Ygit Bakkalbasi (E-Guitar & Vocals), AKA Zack Zack Zack, follow up last year’s impressive 11-track debut LP, “Album 1”, with a wicked DIY video for the new single “EV”, off the band’s forthcoming sophomore album, “Album 2.”
Along the duo’s signature vibrant and hypnotic mix of metronomic, bouncy rhythms, simmering, pulsing, murky synthetic textures and spicy Anatolian folk instrumentation, “EV” insinuates a dangerous, arousing, and claustrophobic aura to wrap a driving undulating and droning bassline, relentless lashing tinny beats, sparse lilting, muffled rumbling blows, and exotic, searing cumba saz string melodies around sinister, somber baritone vocals, dropping forlorn regret into an alternate universe of dark, dancing, retro-futuristic dread.
Fanciful Turkish lyrics describe shifting scenes of surreal introspections to evoke feelings of fear, isolation, and pain from a subconscious well of disintegrated bliss.
The evocative DIY video, shot on location at the inaugurated in 2019 and now defunct “Wonderland Eurasia” amusement park, previously known as “Ankapark”, captures the modern dystopic madness of Ankara, Turkey, where a desperate political party vied for votes using over-the-top spending and childhood dreams. Ransacked rides and scattered prop dinosaur bones malign the mind’s eye of fantasy with horror and melancholy, whilst intimate performance overlays shift space betwixt parallel timelines of impending doom, igniting inner lights of insight and wisdom with the broken vision of a lost system’s short-lived reverie.
