Russian one-man-band based in Yekaterinburg, В.Р.ЕД. / VRED, started a couple of years ago by Andrey Ilyushkin, is a gripping blend of heartfelt and emotional songwriting, equal parts noir-ish gloominess and subtle wistful melodic quality, echoing nostalgic and sombre indie/new wave tones along with brooding post-punk leanings, laced with typical dark esoteric Soviet lyricism.
The new single “Уже не я / Not me anymore” uncoils emotional, poignantly searing guitar melodies that quiver and gleam atop low brisk pulsing basslines and nimble repetitive beats, interspersed by shattered claps, while hypnotic vibrating sad male vocals detach in fluttering sorrow into the brooding sea of despair.
Russian lyrics lost in fatalist gloom use poetic metaphors and symbols to colour a dismal portrait of an old grey man wallowing in guilt, shame, and epic ruin.
