WL//WH Video of the Day: VICTORIA “S.C.R.A.P.”

Video Of The Day  VICTORIA

Victoria, an Australian supergroup of sorts based in Eora/Sydney, comprised of Cameron Emerson-Elliott (Youth Group, Songs), Alison Galloway (Godstar, Smudge), Patrick Matthews (The Vines, Youth Group) and Max Doyle (Songs), heralds the new year with the second single, S.C.R.A.P., from the forthcoming sophomore album Paris Flowers”, via Scenic Drive Records, accompanied by a symbolic video, put together by band member Max.

In the wake of the praised debut full-length, “Treats” in 2013, the four-piece deftly craft a fresh and heartfelt take on timeless guitar pop/rock, treading the intersection between The Dunedin Sound, The Go-Betweens, The Wake, The Apartments, Felt and the Kinks, from which they take their name.

The title is a play on the word scrap: the scrapper who keeps coming back for more, despite the broken nose, the scrapbooker (which Max does for his 15K followers on his page @scrapdoyle) and, thirdly, the scrap on a junkpile.

The nostalgic and introspective “S.C.R.A.P” causes lilting guitar strums to hover blurrily, flecked by poignantly ringing, vibrant bittersweet melodies, with soft blowing immersive glows over lively, slightly sad and meandering bass pulses, and soft shuffling drums, to hold restless, crooning male vocals, radiating with layers of supportive echoes, with a sense of urgency, pain, and growth dependent on letting go.

Max created the scrap-collages and the scrap-video from mountains of prints and Polaroids lying around his place from his career as a photographer, mixing old images with new.

A jagged stream of scrapbook images, created by the imaginative eye of Max, takes us through a disjointed landscape where pop culture, artistic endeavour, and landmark locations sync with the soundtrack. Cut-out overlays, secured with tape, combine with changes in depth and intervals of smooth scrolling to reinvigorate some of life’s most cherished memories.

Keep up with Victoria:
