WL//WH Video Of The Day: VARSOVIE “Perspective Nevski” (Official Video)

Video Of The Day  Varsovie

A familiar presence on WL//WH since its early days, the longstanding French Dark Post-punk band Varsovie from Grenoble, made up of Arnault Destal (drums, lyrics, music, art direction) and Grégory Catherina (vocals, guitars, bass, music) return with an interpretive video of the first single, “Perspective Nevskic”, from Varsovie’s fifth full-length album “Pression à froid”, scheduled for release on October 6, 2023, via Icy Cold Records

Nevsky Prospekt deceives at all hours of the day, but the worst time of all is at night […] when the devil himself is abroad, kindling the street lamps with one purpose only: to show everything in a false light.N. Gogol

The song draws inspiration from the final sentence of the 1835 short story “Perspective Nevskiis” by the Ukrainia-born, Russian writer & dramatist Nicolai Gogol, shining light onto the “strange echo” that exists between the setting of the story and the current geopolitical situation we find ourselves in today.

“Perspective Nevski” urges tenebrous, moody, and somehow sinister auras, to ignite urgent, stomping drum beats, stabbing bass line menace, along with jittery, piercing, and obsessive guitar riffs, to insinuate distorted, abrasive poignancy around angsty, urgent French vocal passions, delivering dire warnings, into restless divergent frequencies of illusion, manipulation, and dread.

Thought-provoking visuals harness the stylish brooding energy of Varsovie to sync perfectly with the dark psychological suggestions of the soundtrack. Poetic lyrics sculpt a dystopic, fearful realm of social alienation where an invisible hand of coercion, both virtual and organic, moves silently in unnoticeable increments to create a desired change in society.
