WL//WH Video Of The Day Urge
Triggered by vocalist Adrien Broué and guitarist Simon Chaubard from the longstanding Toulouse-based brutal hardcore metallers Plebeian Grandstand, soon joined by drummer Hugo Dupuis, bassist Clément Libes and guitarist Mathieu Félix (ex-members of Las Aves, Good Morning TV, M83, Kid Wise), Urge is a new French nuanced Post-punk unit fresh from dropping a DIY video for the debut single “Desolated Auguries”, via fellow independent label Icy Cold Records.
The five piece stands for a primal cry that, rather than accept their generational fate of a bleak future,
‘burns as a steadfast flame in the abyss, urging the quest for beauty, meaning, and tragedy even amid chaos.’
An introspective and shadowy combination of simmering brooding Post-punk moods, with icy Coldwave synth washes and Pixie-esque, both atmospheric and haunting, bright suspended 6-string tones, “Desolated Auguries” somberly vibrates on the dense resonant throbs of broody bass lines, and dull hypnotic drum beats, pierced by searing and sparkling melancholic guitar melodies, layered with grungy distorted riffs and forlorn fluid keyboard flows, to achingly reverberate and sway alongside sad contemplative vocals, into an immersive release of slow-burning tension.
A thought-provoking DIY lyric video blurs cartoon clips with provocative street protests and scary natural disasters to make a compelling statement about the world. The vision is blurry and hard to see, like the shapeshifting lyrics, but global societal unrest at the hands of a greedy, unnatural/anti-human system is the theme. If you look carefully, you will see small snippets of rehearsal footage along with some shadowy suggestions that sync with the sentimental vibe of the soundtrack.
