Following last year’s debut album “Pensées Noires”, Tout Debord, the solo Goth-tinged Coldwave project of Paris-denizen, Minsk-bred artist Leonid Diaghilev, has dropped a new EP, “Burning Love”, via Berlin-based DIY label Detriti Records.
Five tracks clearly rooted in the most atmospheric and gloomy 80s UK Post-punk, imbued with a sparse and spindly, yet resonant and densely introspective frigid minimalism.
The title track “Burning Love”, a song about fear, patience, and passion, is energetically led by a dour chugging bass line, relentless meandering in the foreground, alongside a cold drum machine that jolts along in monotone hits, tormented insistently by trembling, effected-filled guitar melodies, to shimmer desolately in the bleak haze, veiled by spectral synths drifting from afar, around echoed, moody vocals, switching from aloof detachment to haunted longing.
Except for the tighter and urgent “It’s raining everyday”, possibly also one of the best episodes, where the voice fades in and out, like a ghost, the remaining part, weaved by the constant feature of driving sonorously grumbling bass pulsations, plodding rhythms, faded keyboards and heart-rending, pain-fueled skeletal 6-strings, carves intense, alienating and melancholic auras, overcast with dismal shadows, steeped in contemplative abysmal depths.
The DIY visuals suggest, like a daydream or a memory, a thick psychedelic haze of translucent overlays and hypnotic reflections that transform the appearance of Tout Debord as he performs “Burning Love.” There is also an array of suggestive imagery shuffled in, such as an urban introspection and a mysterious garden walk, piquing curiosity and imagination.
