The World Is Against You (TWIAY), the now full-fledged Wellington, NZ-based experimental alternative rock five-piece collective, started in 2024 by multi-instrumentalist Thomas Waddington with the fresh addition of Stefan Jenkins, Rhys Hicks, David Hurnen, and Ezra Beckett, unveils the video by Reef Bridges for the latest single, “Skyrim III”, part of a forthcoming debut album via local independent record label Glasshead Records.
Lyrically, the song talks about when a family member tries to control your thoughts and feelings through a perception that does not match your own.
The moody, droning and propulsive “Skyrim III” combines jagged, scraping, dry guitar riffs, and emotive keyboard strains with a rush of crashing, cymbal-heavy shuffling drumming and taut pinpoint bass grooves, to build up a syncopated, swooshing, wobbly flux that warps, screeches and wavers, at times sparkly stops-and-goes, then tumbles down through fast-paced, rolling rhythm patterns, concurrently with dreamy, anxious male vocals, stressed out by manipulative behaviours.
In the paired visuals by Reef Bridges, TWIAY performs “Skyrim III” under layers of transformative lighting. The scene shifts from a dark, jewel-toned psychedelia to a low-light, hazy darkness whilst a speeding nighttime tunnel connects the two. Blurry trace overlays draw out a ‘ghostly’ form from the band members, visually displaying the nightmarish dissociation explained by the soundtrack.
