WL//WH Video Of The Day: THE ULTIMATE DREAMERS “Envoler (single version)” (Official Video)

Video Of The Day  THE ULTIMATE DREAMERS

Originally from Lessines, Belgium, the birthplace of surrealist René Magritte, the now Brussels-based Cold Post Punk quartet The Ultimate Dreamers, formed in the mid-1980s, presents a re-recorded version of “Envoler,”  lifted from last February’s studio album “Paradoxical Sleep,”  via Spleen+, accompanied by the captivating visuals directed by longtime collaborator Misty, a surreal and moving new wave track that combines the icy tension of Joy Division‘s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” with the tearful melancholy of Trisomie 21‘s “Il Se Noie”.

Sung in French, the band’s native language, “Envoler”, for a while one of the highlights of The Ultimate Dreamers‘ live shows, has been paired with a breathtaking reinterpretation by Parisian collective Curtain, and it will be followed on 19 September by an additional alternative version, performed in Dutch, titled “Wegvliegen.”

A subdued song at its most atmospheric, sober and stirring vulnerability, betwixt elegy, sorrow, and devotion, pulses on the stark heartbeat of a perpetually murmuring low end sequence, punctuated by hypnotic tinny snares, surrounded by weeping synth chimes lingering desolately in the air, layered with airy, chilly, swelling washes and achingly glistening guitar lines, whilst deeply melancholic pain-filled vocals accept Fate.

The Official Video by Misty uses negative light to explore how the too-bright, oversaturated vision illuminates the darkness but at the same time blinds us to natural beauty. There is also a lot of symbolism about rain and fire, up and down, fragmentation and wholeness, syncing seamlessly with the haunting dualism and esotericism of the soundtrack.

The Ultimate Dreamers‘ 2-track single, “Envoler”, including the Curtain remix, is out now via Spleen+ label;  while the digital Dutch version “Wegvliegen,” plus all three songs, compiled on a CD, will be released on 19 September.
