Formed in 2020, SEQUENTIAL ZERO, the Australian/US transcontinental collaboration between Producer/Vocalist Ant Banister (Mantravision Productions, Sounds Like Winter, Lunar Module, Heatwave, Def FX – Sydney, AU), Guitarist/Vocalist Bruce Nullify (Orcus Nullify -South Carolina, US) and Synthesist/Vocalist Colin Gallagher (Burnt Souls – Sydney, AU), fresh from releasing their new single, “Fourth Sequence”, a fourth of a set of five Bandcamp only two-track singles, that will form the spine of the forthcoming debut album, step back to their third one for the band’s latest video “My Darker Side”, to explore hidden parts of the human psyche using 80s inspired electronic-driven Darkwave, Coldwave and New Wave sound elements.
Metaphysical lyrics explore the subconscious domain of fear and desire with a focus on the fabled shadow self, AKA “My Darker Self.”
Cold, sparkling, and forbidden atmospherics layer angsty frenetic synth flashes with low pulsing bass lines, and steady marching drum beats to carry strong vocal declarations through distant uncertain echoes, shredded by pent-up abrasive guitar swells to warp twinkling horizons of icy bright hope with the daunting frequencies of doubt and dread.
The introspective video, by Bruce Nullify, alternates hazy, outdoor panoramic views with a dim neon-lit performance to evoke feelings of disharmony, transition, and rebirth. Environmental overlays contradict retro modern fantasy with beauty and insight to expose the conflicting ideologies betwixt nature and synthetics. Apocalyptic imagery of slithering serpents, destructive wildfires, and brutal beast behaviours invoke Mother Nature’s power of balance and harmony to destroy negative light inversions with justice and strength.
