Video Of The Day SEABLITE
Formed in 2016, Seablite is a four-piece ‘odd pop’ band from San Francisco, California, made up of Lauren Matsui (Guitar, Vocals, Synth), Jen Mundy (Lead Guitar), Andy Pastalaniec (Drums), and Galine Tumasyan (Bass, Vocals, Synth), on the verge of releasing their highly-anticipated sophomore full-length LP, “Lemon Lights”, mastered by Mark Gardener of Ride, due out on September 29, 2023 via fellow Bay Area‘s independent label Mt.St.Mtn.
The quartet have just dropped the mesmerizing crepuscular video created by Jenn Dorn Heard, for the second single “Pot of Boiling Water.”
“Inspired by noisy guitar bands of the ‘80s along with shoegaze and dream pop groups of the ‘90s, Seablite pursue a light and airy variant of the sound as evidenced on their debut album from 2019, Grass Stains & Novocaine.”
Often compared to late ’80s/early ’90s bands such as Ride, Lush, Pale Saints, MBV and Veronica Falls, Seablite‘s nuanced Shoegaze sound, at times sprinkled with sparkling Jangle Pop, threads immersive and emotive soundscapes, teetering between lights and shades, reflection and noise, haunted, as in this case, by The Cure’s moody undercurrents.
“Pot of Boiling Water”, lyric-wise, reports on the toxic state of world affairs, slowly rising into an explosive inflection point.
An obsessively chugging and meandering post-punk bass line throbs along with steady mid-tempo drum beats, to drive introspective moods disrupted by a hazy swarm of bittersweet nostalgia, weaved by a distorted fuzzed-out veil of sad guitar riffs, dim rippling melancholic melodies, and subtle searing poignant guitar wails, whilst a depth-defying, soft yet penetrating, vocal angst, helplessly sways amid a lingering dystopic doom.
Surreal dreamlike visions by Jenn Dorn Heard fuse stirring, sentimental imagery with a smoky performance by Seablite to display the detached, heady vibes of the soundtrack. Strategic shades of lights and darkness transform suggestive expressions, thought-provoking symbols, and illusory reflections with a mysterious air of insightful perception, bringing the viewer into the shocked dissociative realm of an awakened global observer.
Seablite‘s second album, “Lemon Lights”, is slated for release, in Limited Vinyl 12″ & Digital formats, on September 29, 2023 via the Mt.St.Mtn label.
