WL//WH Video Of The Day: NOVYI LEF “Part of the Bigger Thing”

Video Of The Day Novyi Lef

Named after the 1920s Soviet arts publication Novyi Lef, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne synth-heavy duo, made of Euan Lynn (lead vocals, synthesizers, programming) and Tom Reah (synthesizers, programming), channel their favourite post-punk synth sounds inspired by bands like The Normal, New Order, Le Tigre, and LCD Soundsystem, with a keen dystopian edge to offer an angry, political perspective on electroclash, plying their trade in architectural punk to subvert current systematic oppression with eye-opening facts.

An Official Music Video for the high energy Synthpop new single “Part of the Bigger Thing” invokes Kraftwerk’s ‘Autobahn’ but with a curious English setting, infusing gritty field recordings into the driving force of bass tones to pull an emotional flow of toxicity through the band’s signature pounding drum beats, and multifaceted flashing analogue synth strains, composing disruptive electronic harmonies intertwined with an intense atmospheric presence of impassioned male vocals, dramatically hissing to release disillusioned dreams into the swirling meltdown of glitchy Disturbia.

Dystopian metaphors depict a dark force rising in power to consume everything in a wake of destruction, fulfilling its master plan from a philosophy, wherein lies the strange notion “Constructivist utopia born to die.”

In the 1960s Newcastle‘s council rebuilt a motorway with promises for a utopian future, video captures the present-day mechanical flow of engines in a meandering pace of circular disillusionment around urban decay as graffiti, cement fissures, peeling paint, and empty parking lots. Black and white video strikes contrast with monochromatic deception, drawing the eye to the faults of an architectural beauty now eroding into an abandoned, haphazardly ruin, while a dramatic, angry performance enhances the caustic nature of the soundtrack with a powerful sentiment of political unrest.
