WL//WH Video of the Day: NAVEL GRAZR “Heads Will Roll”

Video of the Day   NAVEL GRAZR

Started in 2019 as the New York City-based bedroom side pop project of vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist Anjali Nair (Dog in a Man Suit, Endearments, Joyce),  Navel Grazr evolved since 2023 into a duo with producer & multi-instrumentalist Dominic Dellaquila (guitar, synth, drums) from Project Diem, to create a cinematic, goth-tinged dream pop narrative imbued with moody, shadowy ambience.

The band returns with director/editor Anjali Nair’s first music video “Heads Will Roll,” the opening track of last April’s EP “Elegies”, with Aaron Sankin on bass.

“Elegies” touches on themes of distance, memory, belonging, and loss, reflective of Nair’s experiences navigating her identity as an Indian American who moved to the States in childhood.

“Heads Will Roll” builds a rich, immersive, and slow-burning thread of beautiful, strong female vocals rising and falling in lush emotional harmonies, while dramatic string motifs and exotic glowing guitar riffs vibrantly swirl atop  heavy humming bass line and charging drum beats, to evoke a sense of rebirth at the hands of reclaiming one’s power.

The poetic visuals by Anjali Nair creatively fuse an evocative red veiled dance by Raissa Xie with kaleidoscopic editing and symbolic imagery to invoke the modern vibe of the soundtrack. The vision challenges the traditional archetype of a ballerina while the strategic choice of color and symbols makes the concept not only thought-provoking but aesthetically stunning.
