WL//WH Video Of The Day: MONUM “This Night”

WL//WH Video Of The Day  MONUM

Varying from flickering, pulsing electro rhythms to contemplative, ethereal ambience, Momun is the Italian nuanced Darkwave solo music project, founded in 2022, by Rome-based artist Marcello Buffetti.

Fresh from last October’s second six-track EP “Darkness Falls,” via MNM Records, Momun chose the startling marionette animations from the renowned innovative French puppeteer Philippe Genty, to visualize his immersive and elegiac closing song, “This Night.”

“This Night” is a transformative poem about embracing fear that arouses a dark ethereal realm slowly swept by cinematic and poignant synth drifts, resonant sombre organ bass throbs along with wistful, rolling tinkling keys, to surround numb, softly moping vocals in a protective canopy of cold multi-vibrational tones, where the only glimpse of light and hope comes from the warm and organic emotional textures of minimal orchestral swathes and vaguely oriental, shivering spindly strings.

Soul-stirring visuals sync a puppet performance by Philippe Genty, taken from the 1979 to 1994 BBC variety show Paul Daniels Magic Show, with the haunting mental state of the lyrics. Imagine a dark stage where a man dressed in all black becomes invisible by blending into the backdrop while a lone spotlight directs attention onto a puppet wearing a sad face mask. Dedicate your time to watch the professional puppeteer use fine tuned artistry and precision to manipulate the confused figure while the soundtrack evokes a range of deep-seated emotions.
