WL//WH Video Of The Day: MONO/XYD “Underage”

WL//WH Video Of The Day  MONO/XYD

Mono/XYD, the eclectic Dark Electronic project of Anna Hinrichs and Kay Osterloh from Bremen, Germany, drops a video filmed by Lila, Henning, and Kay for their latest single “Underage”, also featuring dance-ready remixes by Dutch musicians Alina Valentina and Bornia, the solo project of Staatseinde’s Andy Dufter.

The duo embrace styles beyond the boundaries of Darkwave, adding elements of Darkpop, Synth-Wave, Techno, Industrial and Body Music to a refined, gothy, multifaceted electronic-laden mix, suited for both intimate thought-provoking listenings, and powerful, murky dance floor-bound perspectives. Check the “Inmotion” EP on the Spanish label SOIL for this latter facet.

Underage showcases the struggles of today’s youth as they navigate adolescence in our society,

A slow-paced, haunting, atmospheric noirish ballad drifts through a neon-lit, sadness-drenched synthscape of eerie blinking melodies laced with direly obsessive forlorn keys, and swirling bittersweet glittering arpeggios, to weep and somberly panic over a relentless undertow of broody pulsing bass thrum and heavy stomping beats whilst lost, hopeless vocals express brokenness, loss of faith, loneliness, and disconnection before a pain-filled emotional echo emerges.

In the visuals filmed by Lila, Henning, and Kay, Anna Hinrichs walks alone at night in a fur collared black coat, smoking cigarettes and sadly introspecting, to sync with the desolation of the soundtrack. A vintage movie projector flickers symbolic imagery over Anna as she stands emotionless in front of a wall to highlight the blurry bittersweet lines that exist between childhood, adolescence and beyond.
