The Hull, Québec-based Dark Wave duo MENTHÜLL, made of Gabriel Clémentier and Yseult Demésanges, explore the in and out shadows of New Order-tinted strobe light pumping dance floor allure in “BACKUP PLAN,” the title track of the new 3-track EP, a song about almost giving up and being brave.
A dark disco-y number that trots on punchy programmed beats woven with driving, throbbing bass line grooves to ceasessly bounce with swirling intervals of flashy, bright, forlorn synth riffs, smeared with poignant, intense inlays, alongside chugging and buzzy undertones, to immerse layers of breathy, magnetic dual male/female vocals, feeling at ease about facing destiny.
In the DIY paired visuals, MENTHÜLL shadow dance to “Backup Plan” under layers of transformative red and blue lighting to depict the disappearing theme mentioned in the soundtrack. Then, episodes of clarity that show the couple playing on the seashore and in the snow start to peak through the hazy dissociation to evoke a sense of hope and renewal.
