Inanis Yoake, the London-based collaborative dark music project born in 2020, centered on former Naevus guitarist Simone Skeleton (also on vocals, lyrics and sounds), and vocalist and keyboardist Risa Hara, reminds us of last September’s warmly-received third full-length album, “Shallow Mist,” via Dark Vinyl Records, with a video, edited by EvoX and Fritz Hagal, for “Symbols”, featuring the magnetic vocals of former IKON and current frontman of Australian goth rockers Chiron, Michael Aliani, the bass of Toshi JC, and the drums of Yuki Edo.
The duo evolved from their early neofolk leanings, crafting an earnest, sober and well-rounded blend of post-punk, darkwave, and synthwave, scattered with new wave, folk, and industrial flavours.
Dancing between intense moody Post-punk and gloomy evocative Goth Rock, “Symbols” places a strong vibrant undertow of hard-hitting, off-beat drumming and anxious meandering bass pulses, to ground wistful shivering synth glows and layers of urgent, prickly, pain-filled, echoing guitars, that stormily swirl, and cathartically rise, around the poignant vocal interweaving of Alliani’s ominous baritone spoken words and Simone’s heartfelt emotional longing.
The paired visuals, edited by EvoX and Fritz Hagal, set a strobing underground basement as the solemn backdrop for Inanis Yoake, Michael Aliani, and Toshi JC as they perform “Symbols” in sync with the soul-stirring soundtrack. Frightening shadows, intervals of red vision, and symbolic editing seamlessly bring forth the powerful sense of soulful struggle felt during grave times of loss, emptiness, forgetting, and healing.
