WL//WH Video Of The Day: GOLDEN APES “Stranger (When I Left)”

WL//WH Video Of The Day  GOLDEN APES

Following last March’s latest track release, “The Highest Point,” Golden Apesthe Berlin-based Post Punk five-piece keep to their unpredictable, evocative musical path that is set to culminate in a new album next year via Icy Cold Records.

Established in 1998, the longstanding band, made of Peer Lebrecht (music, words, vox, synths), Christian Lebrecht (bass), Maximilian Hennig (guitars), Salomon Bosse (drums, acoustic guitar), and Gerrit Haasler (guitars), returns with a tour video for their latest single, “Stranger (When I Left)”, a guitar-driven song about departure, loss, and alienation.

The song is dedicated to all and everyone

who was with us through the years…

…and all the ghosts that haunt us in our dreams…

Almost harking back to the group’s Goth rock roots, hardly a coincidence, considering the track serves as a musical and lyrical sequel to “Travelling Strangers, a song that dates back some 25 years, the equally abrasive and atmospheric “Stranger (When I Left)” compels steady, heart-palpitating drum beats and swaggering bass lines under layers of grey misty distorted riffs, carved by vibrant, sharp pain filled echoing melodies, to carry strong, declarative baritone vocals of a seductive husky tone, through a shimmery cathartic ocean interlude into a final ascending triumphant electric climax.

“Viagiatorri stranieri: An Observation” was shot in Italy during the last days of April, and syncs the Golden Apes sightseeing in Rome, Succivo, Pescara, and Carpi with the self-discovery of the soundtrack. Soul-stirring churches, beaches, and outdoor patios intersperse with performance footage taken at Associazone Ekidna (Carpi) to evoke a warm sense of curiosity and friendship unto a symbolic ending where an aeroplane takes flight. Be sure to stick around for the credits to hear Voyna‘s evocative brass-infused end theme and see interesting museum exhibits and a red moon crescent on the horizon.
