WL//WH Video Of The Day: GNAC “The Whispering of Shadows”

Video Of The Day  GNAC

GNAC, a name pulled from one of the twenty short stories, “Luna e Gnac” (“moon and gnac”), of Italo Calvino‘s  1963 book “Marcovaldo: Or the Seasons in the City”, is the alias, since the late 90s, of the “imaginary film soundtrack” musical project of the Stirling UK-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Mark Tranmer, whose past endeavours include The Montgolfier Brothers (with the sorely missed Roger Quigley), Vetchinsky Settings (with James Hackett of Glasgow band The Orchids) and Wingdisk (with Pale Saints founding member Ian Masters).

In anticipation of the September 5, 2024 release of GNAC’s 9th full-length album “Elegant Contact”, the British musician has shared a video, animated by the Turin, Italy-based multi-dexterous artist Isobel Blank, for the first excerpt, “The Whispering of Shadows”, featuring the familiar guest vocals from Kathleen Stosch of Constant Follower

The deeply emotional, cinematic instrumental song, “The Whispering of Shadows”, gently glides over an endless hypnotic bed of soft percussive patterns, subtly trembling bottom ends and wistful piano melodies, veiled by immersive featherlight ethereal vocalizations and stirring bright swells of orchestral string harmonies, once more able to warm the soul and trigger the imagination with every new listen.

To sync with the transformative impact of the soundtrack, a blend of hand-drawn illustrations, animations by Isobel Blank, and natural outdoor imagery become a symbolic emotional journey. When the shadow self appears, an animated crawling spider leaves the safety of the heart chakra to travel into the wild of organic healing. After a thought-provoking adventure, the little pink traveller, now recharged, has a newfound song of beauty that shifts perception from dark to light.

GNAC‘s forthcoming new album, “Elegant Contact”, will be released in 7″ Lathe Cut (4 tracks) + Digital Download (12 tracks) formats, on September 5, 2024, via Gnac’s DIY label Vertical Features [VF 247]
