Hailing from Wollongong on the south coast of Australia, five-piece DROVES, comprised of Phillip Spiteri, Taylor McAuliffe, Luise Martin, Jonathan McKenzie and Tiernan Browne, have just released their EP“Bloodline”, 3 tracks infused with the band’s fresh and distinctive take on 80’s British post-punk and new wave.
The urgent, angsty synth-driven new single “Bloodline” uncoils intense, ascending shimmering synth melodies, lashing hypnotic beats, and effectively placed pulsating basslines swooping in for a powerful, all-encompassing dichotomous confession echoing between sweeping high-impact, harmonic male vocals at odds with sadly surrendered, female introvert voice in a dizzying array of brooding yet energetic conflicting emotions.
One dark night in a small town riddled in superficiality, bigotry, and injustice a man hides in shame casting shadows of doubt over memories of the past involving deep regret over a decision made at gunpoint.
The uncanny video, filmed & directed by Tom Fletcher and Liam Mahoney from TEEL Studios, is a modern tale with a vintage feel. A family is shunned by the same society responsible for putting them in the line of fire. Darkness falls into the windowpane of an old house un-cloaking silhouettes of the inhabitants as a small group hangs out by a fire, and one the member gets stalked by his worst fears. Light and shadow pinpoint and intensify feelings of suspicion, paranoia and insecurity while the night shoot creates an air of mystery, indecision, and taboo associated with the “victim of shame” presented in the lyrics.
