WL//WH Video Of The Day  DESERT LIMINAL

Quillian’s songs are commonly love letters to friends, reflections of shared moments both idyllic and hellish. “Black Ocean” is a contemplation on inner life during the chaotic years following the death of a loved one, lost to the spiral of addiction.

Desert Liminal is an Experimental Art Pop band from Chicago, Illinois that was founded, almost a decade ago, by songwriter and vocalist Sarah Jane Quillian. In 2018, a Tinder date led to the addition of Rob Logan on drums, and by 2021 SJQ’s vocal mentor, Mallory Lineham, joined as the violinist and noise maker to provide further intriguing broader nuances to the group’s compelling sound.

The three piece has dropped an Official Video, animated by Lemon Pulp Studios, for “Sweet William” the third and final single lifted from the third full-length studio album “Black Ocean,”, due October 18, 2024, via Whited Sepulchre Records.

A sublime ’emo-pop alchemy’ that ushers the listener into a sort of metaphysical sound world that disturbs and soothes in equal measures, “Sweet William” slowly builds, suspended upon dirgey, dramatic piano chords, plodding through with solemn and intense resonant pain, punctuated by stumbling, palpitating drum beats, around wistful, emotional vocal embroidery, layered with airy echoes, to fall into the warm comforting embrace of a soul-stirring shivering convergence woven from gliding hopeless keys and weeping violin swathes.

Twisted, soul-stirring visuals animated by Lemon Pulp Studios begin with a friendly lady giving a man whose heart is bleeding a ride in a convertible under the stars. We soon find out that a shoot-out during a robbery caused the injury and, with vultures circling above, the situation is dire. The mood is a tear-jerker, as it appears she will comfort him unto death, as hers is the last hand he holds. Then, in a surprise final flashback, without him being aware, she shoots him in the back and with a wicked smile she dumps his body into the trunk of the car where other victims lie dead. A thought-provoking metaphor for a person who drains another’s life force under the guise of care.
