WL//WH Video Of The Day: DAVID BORING “Martyr # 1” (Official Music Video)

WL//WH Video Of The Day  David Boring

DAVID BORING is a Hong Kong–based post-punk/noise band known for their uncompromising sound and cathartic, confrontational live performances. Since forming in 2013, they have played a defining role in shaping Hong Kong’s underground scene and indie music landscape, establishing themselves as one of the city’s most vital and unflinching acts.

The five-piece, made up of LAU Janice (Laujan) on vocals, CHEUNG Jason (Jason) on synths/keyboards, CHENG Yat-wa Dave (Waon guitar, YIP Gavin Chun-kit (Yip) on guitar, and LAU Pui-tak (Paiguton drums, rolls out an Official Music Video by Ron Wan (director) and Samuel Chan (cinematographer) for “Martyr # 1”, the third single taken from the forthcoming long anticipated sophomore studio album, “Liminal Beings and Their Echoes”, seven years since their 2017 debut “Unnatural Objects and Their Humans”, scheduled for January 12, 2026 via London-based label Damnably.

“Martyr # 1” investigates the function of surrender, following the protagonist’s tortured inner perspective as they seek peace in a dignified determination through a rolodex of destructive coping mechanisms. Subverting pain from something expressive to what is procedural, the subject consents to dissolution and self-termination in service of purification. As the operation prolongs, thresholds blur, identity is reduced to methods, manageable but impersonal. The martyr becomes a tool of calibration – their loss generating equilibrium.

The song pulses relentlessly on a slow burning industrial, visceral, dark psychological aura driven by stark, punchy drum patterns, sonorous gurgling bass lines, disturbing squealing guitars laced with abrasive, jagged riffs and nervous, icy synths, around a dramatic male/female vocal interplay, increasing in edginess from softly sung dreamy allure, to a screechy and storming transformative finale, where primal female screams layer with a shadowy dual chant to evoke a sense of pain, torture and ritual death.

The Official Music Video, by Ron Wan (director) and Samuel Chan (cinematographer), ‘is an ambient neo-noir clip featuring David Boring and is an homage to classic horror and voyeuristic slashers.’

At the beginning, a dark figure menaces a sexy, Gothic/Puritan maid with a hammer. After a sweaty, provocative dance club scene, the hammer appears lying on the floor, ownerless, amidst a group of businessmen who are voyeuristically watching recordings of the maid. Then, an eerie, disjointed time loop continues ad infinitum, leaving the mystery of who the dark figure is and exactly what happened after he appeared open to the imagination.

David Boring‘s second full-length album, “Liminal Beings and Their Echoes”, will be released, in Ltd. Double Vinyl 12″ & CD formats, on January 12, 2026, via London-based label  Damnably.
