WL//WH Video Of The Day: CHEERLESS “Petrichor”

Video Of The Day  CHEERLESS

Hailing from the North Eastern London Borough of Hackney, Cheerless is a four-piece shoegaze band formed in 2021, drawing on late ’80s and ’90s shoegaze influences, fresh from dropping their second single of the year, titled “Petrichor,” a prelude to an upcoming EP.

“Petrichor” has become a storming highlight in their live set, often bringing the house down with its powerful energy. The song delves into the relationship between humans and nature, exploring the consequences of our impact on the environment and how nature adapts and responds.

Blissed-out, piercing and dissociative, Petrichor compels plodding, shuffling drums and low rumbling basslines to underlie a lush echo-drenched, kaleidoscopic sea of sparkling and swirling guitar layers, intensely flickering around softly distant melancholic and angsty vocals to bring forth a lost and hopeless feeling encircled by uncertainty and danger.

Trippy visuals by Hayden Martin slow time and shift perception over an urban backyard setting, to help showcase humanity’s effect on nature. Imagine if you left a blurry silhouette trail behind you wherever you go. Now try to think about how it would be if your body essence went through inanimate objects, like a ghost, but the connection remains in an ethereal form. A thought-provoking vision about the unseen connection between man and his environment.
