Melbourne-based, Australian Bedroom Pop project of songwriter & musician Calum Newton AKA Candy drops an engaging video, directed by Caitlin Wong, for the subconscious single “Challenger Deep“, taken from the upcoming self-released 5th album “A Pull To Heal”
As energetic and floating, as it is melancholic and dreamy, spiced up with intriguing airy Prefab Sprout-like hooks in the chorus, “Challenger Deep” unravels wiry, distorted guitar melodies and shimmering jangly strummed riffs that explode atop dynamic scattered beats and low simmering bass lines to form a tumultuous yet ecstatic surge of chaos around the magnetic presence of anxious, hopeful male vocals rising and falling in an intoxicating descent of brooding bliss.
Heartfelt lyrics dive into the psychological realms of fear, doubt, and persistence, using a captivating metaphor about travelling to the deepest known point in the earth’s seabed, to explore the intricate feelings found within a long-term relationship.
Tongue in cheek video captures a downtrodden day in the life of Candy, where basketball and surfing fiascos alternate with a home jam session to emphasize the power of will, fate, and perseverance. Comedic acting skills blend with an attention-grabbing retro wardrobe to add flair and pizazz to the maddening caper, while slow-motion transition scenes and panoramic views of the seashore and skyline further enhance the adventure of mishaps.
Candy new single ‘Affirmation Fixation’ launch will take place, along with his full band, on April 16, 2021 at The Leadbeater Hotel (Richmond, VIC), supported by Kosmetika (tickets here).
The new album “A Pull To Heal” is due out on April 30, 2021.
